3 Critical Risks in Pump Truck Operations: Avoiding Disaster with Precision

Concrete pump truck rollover, high-voltage electric shock, and boom breakage are three major risks, each of which is a matter of life and death.

Concrete pump truck rollover, high-voltage electric shock, and boom breakage are three major risks, each of which is a matter of life and death.

01 Vehicle Rollover/Overturning Accidents

👀Main Causes:Insufficient Ground Support: If the ground supported by the pump truck's outriggers is soft (e.g., uncompacted backfill) or the concrete pad is not strong enough, the outriggers may sink, causing a rollover.

💥Improper Operation: Failure to fully extend the outriggers or to adjust them to a level position during operation may also increase the risk of rollover.

✅Key Preventive Measures:

* A foundation load test (150kPa bearing capacity requirement) must be conducted before operation;

* Outrigger pad area ≥ twice the outrigger area, using 1.2m × 1.2m steel plates for padding;

* Vehicle levelness deviation ≤ 1°, monitor outrigger sinking throughout the operation;

* Parking is strictly prohibited on slopes, in backfill, in culverts, or other dangerous areas.

02. Boom Contact with High-Voltage Lines

👀Main Cause: The pump truck boom comes into contact with high-voltage power lines during movement or extension, resulting in electric shock or arc burns. These accidents are often caused by operators neglecting safe distances or taking chances.

✅Key Preventive Measures:

Before operation, ensure there are no high-voltage lines nearby and use professional tools to measure the distance;

Set up conspicuous warning signs and demarcate prohibited operation zones;

Assign dedicated personnel to supervise and direct operations, and immediately stop the machine when approaching a safe distance.

03 Boom Fracture or Instability

👀Main Causes: Structural Fatigue or Overload: Long-term use exceeding design load or boom metal fatigue may lead to connecting rod cracking and boom fracture.

💥Collision Damage: Improper operation causing the boom to collide with surrounding objects, resulting in hidden damage and subsequent fracture.

✅Key Preventive Measures:

Weekly inspection of boom connecting pins (wear ≤ 5% of original diameter), and bolt torque;

Replace pipelines after 300 hours of use, and check pipe wall thickness with an ultrasonic thickness gauge every shift (replace immediately if below 85%);

Install an intelligent pressure monitoring system with an automatic alarm set at the pressure limit;

Operators must wear face protection equipment, and non-operating personnel must stay away from the pumping area.

With the rapid development of the construction industry, methods for transporting concrete are constantly evolving. In the past, stationary concrete pumps (or "trailer concrete pumps") were the primary method, but truck-mounted concrete pumps ( also called "concrete line pump" )have now gradually become the mainstream choice.
