China also imported and produced mechanical concrete pumps in the 1950s.
China also imported and produced mechanical concrete pumps in the 1950s, but the technology was very basic and production volume was small. In the early 1960s, the Shanghai Heavy Machinery Plant produced a stationary pump with a displacement of 40 m³/h, modeled after the Soviet C-284. While it saw some application in production, it failed to gain widespread adoption. In the early 1970s, the Construction Machinery Research Institute of the former Ministry of Machine Building collaborated with the Shenyang Vibrator Factory to develop the HB-8 concrete pump. The Construction Machinery Research Institute of the former State Construction Commission, in collaboration with the Changde Machinery Factory in Hunan, developed the HB-15 concrete pump. The Hydraulic Machinery Factory of the Seventh Hydropower Bureau of the Ministry of Electric Power developed the HB-30 concrete pump, modeled after the Japanese 700S-1 concrete pump. Furthermore, the Beijing Municipal Construction Engineering Research Institute, in collaboration with the Beijing Construction Machinery Repair and Manufacturing Plant, and the Beijing Rubber Factory No. 2 and No. 6, successfully trial-produced the HBJ-30 extrusion pump in 1978.
It is evident that from the 1970s onwards, China vigorously explored various types of concrete pumps, but only the HB-8 from Shenyang and the HB-30 from Jiajiang Hydraulic Machinery Factory achieved mass production.
In the early 1980s, the total number of domestically produced concrete pumps was less than 200 units, and there were no concrete pump trucks at all. During this period, many large-scale concrete pouring projects in my country relied heavily on imported equipment, such as the pouring of caissons and hot blast furnace foundations for the Shanghai Baosteel power station. In the mid-1980s, my country's concrete pumping machinery made significant progress. To promote the development of domestic ready-mixed concrete, the Ministry of Construction selected Shenyang Engineering Machinery Plant and Hubei Provincial Construction Plant to be the first to introduce advanced technologies from internationally renowned concrete pump manufacturers, marking the beginning of my country's pumped concrete era. Following the infrastructure boom of 1993 and 1994, dozens of domestic companies began producing concrete pumps, but only a dozen or so manufacturers could produce more than 30 units annually. Intense market competition forced major manufacturers to adopt internationally advanced concrete pump technologies to gain a competitive advantage. For users, the technical complexity of the concrete pump itself is not easy to grasp; they are more concerned with the pump's reliability and adaptability to different types of concrete. Therefore, concrete adaptability and pumping reliability are the top priorities for domestically produced concrete pump technology.
Meanwhile, with China's accession to the WTO, market competition intensified. Manufacturers fully explored their potential and leveraged their strengths, leading to continuous improvements in product performance and quality. Hydraulic systems evolved towards integration, with open systems and constant power control becoming commonplace, especially for high-flow pumps. Open systems offer numerous advantages, including lower oil temperatures, higher reliability, and easier maintenance. Some products have approached or reached world-class levels and are participating in international competition.
Since the 1970s, concrete pumps in various countries have seen significant development, with design, manufacturing, and pumping technologies gradually being perfected. Especially in recent years, breakthroughs have been achieved in the mobility, stability, performance, and technical capabilities of concrete pumps, leading to their widespread adoption.
