Research on concrete pumps began in the early 20th century.
Research on concrete pumps began in the early 20th century. The French obtained the first patent in 1902, followed by Germany in 1907. In 1913, an American also obtained a patent and manufactured the first concrete pump, but it failed to gain widespread application. In 1927, Fritz Hell of Germany designed and manufactured the first concrete pump, which was then put into use for the first time.
In 1930, Germany manufactured a vertical single-cylinder ball valve piston concrete pump. This pump, driven by a crank and rocker mechanism and featuring a vertical single cylinder, had a poor overall structure and thus poor performance.
In 1932, J. C. Kooyman of the Netherlands made significant improvements to the vertical cylinder design, replacing it with a horizontal cylinder, and manufactured the Kooyman-type concrete pump. This pump featured a horizontal cylinder and two rotary valves linked by connecting rods, greatly improving the reliability of the concrete pump and laying the foundation for modern concrete pump technology. Due to the Kooyman pump's reasonable design and reliable operation, many companies obtained licenses to produce it at the time. Following World War II, the massive destruction caused by the war led to large-scale reconstruction projects, resulting in strong sales and increasing application of mechanical concrete pumps. In the mid-1950s, the West German company Torkrer pioneered the development of hydraulic pumps using water as the working medium.
In 1959, the West German company Schwing produced a truly fully hydraulic concrete pump, laying the technological foundation for modern concrete pumps. Germany boasts some of the world's best concrete pump design and manufacturing technology, consistently leading the development of pumping machinery. It represents the highest level of concrete pump development globally, with the world's two largest concrete pump manufacturers, Schwing and Putzmeister, dominating the market. Their products are comprehensive in variety and specifications, each possessing unique core technologies. For example, Putzmeister primarily uses closed-loop hydraulic systems and S-tube distribution valves, while Schwing employs open-loop hydraulic systems and unique skirt valves. Concrete pumps are also widely used in West Germany.
Japan's development of concrete pumping machinery began in 1950 with the introduction of mechanical concrete pumps from West Germany by Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries. Rapid development only accelerated in the 1970s, with major manufacturers including Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Kyokuto Development, Shinkyo, Niigata, and ShinMaywa. However, the Asian financial crisis and the economic downturn in Japan at the end of the 20th century slowed the development of concrete pumping machinery.
The United States also led the world in concrete pumps. Since the first mechanical concrete pump was developed by Rex (not Lexus) in 1923, it has a history of over 80 years. Hydraulic concrete pumps were already in production in the 1950s, and towed concrete pumps appeared in the mid-1960s. The resolution of key issues such as distribution valves further propelled the development of concrete pumps.
