The industry features strong specialization, prominent customization requirements, and numerous small-scale niche markets, resulting in small production batches for each product specification.

Large enterprises cannot invest the necessary technical R&D resources, market development resources, and management efforts to make it a leading industry, and the industry characteristics limit the entry of large enterprises. For example, large Chinese enterprises such as XCMG and Zoomlion entered the aerial work platform industry in the mid-1990s and early 2000s. After years of operation, Zoomlion currently only has five product announcements with an annual sales volume of approximately 20 units, and XCMG's annual sales volume is also only about 20 units. In the international aerial work platform field, the top ten manufacturers focus on aerial work platforms and related special vehicles.

Because special vehicles belong to the automotive industry, China has strict regulations on enterprise entry, registered capital, foreign investment ratio, product registration, certification, inspection, and defect recalls for the special vehicle industry. At the same time, due to the requirements of the power, municipal, horticultural, and construction industries, the entry barriers for special vehicles are high. At the same time, because the power, municipal, landscaping, and transportation industries are the main applications for aerial work platforms, and the customers are primarily government agencies and large state-owned enterprises, procurement systems have been implemented in supplier access and special maintenance systems. Generally, the production scale of these enterprises is small. In 2009, only 7 companies had annual sales exceeding 50 units. Besides the company and Hangzhou Aichi, which had annual sales exceeding 400 units, the other 5 companies had sales between 50 and 130 units, and the industry's competitive landscape was basically formed.
Taking the 14-meter operating height articulated boom product as an example, most domestic aerial work platform companies can produce it, resulting in ample product supply and fierce market competition. However, high-end products such as hybrid articulated booms are limited by technological capabilities. The number of companies mastering high-end R&D, design, and manufacturing technologies is limited. Jiuhe Heavy Industry is currently one of the few domestic manufacturers capable of developing and producing aerial work platforms with a working height of over 45 meters.
